D&D Tips & Tricks for Players and Dungeon Masters
Tips & Tricks
Forty years of game mastery distilled into practical advice.
The Rule of Cool
Sometimes, fun trumps the rules. If a player wants to leap off the balcony, swing from a chandelier, and deliver a flying kick to the villain — let the dice decide. The best memories come from moments where you said 'yes'.
Prep Encounters, Not Plots
Don't write a novel and force your players through it. Instead, prepare interesting locations, memorable NPCs, and challenging encounters. Let the players steer the story.
Describe Your Spells
Don't just say 'I cast Firebolt.' Describe the arcane energy crackling between your fingers, the trail of smoke and embers. Flavor is free — use it.
Session Zero Saves Campaigns
Before rolling a single die, discuss expectations. What tone are you going for? How do you handle PvP? A good Session Zero prevents a hundred arguments later.
Know Your Character's Motivation
'I'm here for gold' is fine. 'I'm searching for my missing sister' is better. Give your DM story hooks to use, and you'll be rewarded with personalized arcs.
Take Notes. Trust Me.
That NPC name the DM mentioned two sessions ago? It's going to matter. Keep a journal — even rough notes. You'll be the hero of the table when someone asks.
