What Is a Class?
Your class defines what your character can do in the game. It determines your hit points, your proficiency with weapons and armour, the abilities you gain as you level up, and — for spellcasters — the spells you can cast. Think of it as your character's profession.
At first level you choose a single class, and as you gain experience you can either continue in that class or multiclass into a new one. For your first character, sticking with a single class lets you learn its rhythms before you start mixing them.
Martial Classes
Martial classes rely on weapons, tactics, and physical prowess rather than spells. They are the most straightforward to play and an excellent choice for a first character.
- Fighter — master of weapons and armour, with the most attacks per round of any class
- Rogue — stealth, precision damage, and skill mastery; the party's eyes and fingers
- Barbarian — raw fury and unbreakable resilience, fueled by rage
- Monk — disciplined martial artists who channel inner energy into extraordinary feats
Full Spellcasters
Spellcasters draw on magic — arcane, divine, or otherwise — and gain access to powerful spells as they level up. They are more complex to play but offer unparalleled versatility.
- Wizard — studies a spellbook; the widest selection of spells in the game
- Sorcerer — born with magic; fewer spells but powerful metamagic to reshape them
- Cleric — channels divine power to heal, protect, and smite
- Druid — commands nature and shapeshifts into animal forms
- Bard — weaves music and magic; a versatile support and face for the party
- Warlock — bound to a mysterious patron; fewer but potent spells, restored on a short rest
Hybrid and Half-Casters
Some classes blend martial skill with a measure of magic. They are a middle ground — capable in a fight but with enough spellcasting to add depth without overwhelming a new player.
- Paladin — a holy warrior who combines martial might with divine smiting and auras
- Ranger — a wilderness hunter with tracking, favoured enemies, and nature magic
- Artificer — an inventor who infuses magic into devices and armour
Choosing the Right Class
The right class is the one that excites you. If you love the idea of solving problems with a spell, play a caster. If you would rather stand in the front line trading blows, play a martial. If you want a bit of both, a paladin or ranger gives you a foot in each world.
Do not agonise over which class is strongest. Strength shifts with level, party composition, and campaign style. What never shifts is how much fun a character is to play — and that comes from the fit between you and your class, not from the numbers on the page.
The best class is the one that makes you look forward to the next session.
